 Intro

body paragraph 1: Domino scene analysis

Body paragraph 2: Fighting scene analysis

Conclusion

Content: Both body paragraphs need to have the SAME directors intention ( not one per paragraph ). Remember this intention is presented throughout the entirety of the film and particularly evident in these 2 scenes.

You must address: Two cinematography techniques ( and give examples of these ) and how they work together to create an effect for the audience, present the directors intention, position the viewer and cause the viewer to reflect on societal issues.

Remember to: Utilize the S.E.X.Y essay structure, drive your analysis by referring to ‘ must address ‘ bits, Use academic terminology, refer to the scene and how it affects the entirety of the film.

S – Statement … Say what the paragraph is about…The key idea is…What?

E – Explain what you mean. Give details – share your knowledge. Why?

X – Example…Give proof  and evidence to support your thinking.

Y – Your thinking… Summarize what you said and mean.

There is no limit on the amount of words,

 Look for:

  • Quotes
  • Ideas
  • Symbols
  • Illusions
  • Where the scene leads.
  • What things are being made aware to you by the directors intention.

The domino scene duration: 1:36 – 1:40

The fighting scene duration: 1:47.25 – 1:53

Directors Intention ( THEME ) : The directors intention is shown through the narrator’s words, a chain of events and is also shown through a visual ad. The dominoes are in a domino effect representing Vendettas master piece with a stroke of perfection. V perfects the master piece by removing the last domino representing himself, his final event, the finale of his master piece linking to the fight scene.

  • Pulling the masks off at the end makes them apart of it.
  • Double ups known as for shadowing is done through out the entire film. One character will role play the scene and the next will do the same. • Takes one domino out  to represent single strength.
  • Dominoes continue to build up.
  • Each individual domino being symbolic of his plan and each effect it has on the individuals.
  • Montage used alongside his dialogue that is very effective to show what has happened and going to happen to give the view a emotional impact.
  • Everything is created collectively to give the view that feeling.
  • Gay Forks we see it in his montage. Gay forks being hang.
  • The officers are in the dark while speaking with the chancellor.

Assessment:

V for Vendetta is a remarkable film which exposes the governments flaws of political authority issues it creates without realization from the general public. Through the use of symbolism and dialogue, techniques of cinematography. Which become very important to help the viewer to be able to understand the relationship between the characters and to shape the meaning of the film. James McTeigue director of ‘V for Vendetta’ challenges his viewers to think whether what V does is right or wrong and are quickly forced to decide if he is a freedom fighter or terrorist. V’s purpose is only to awaken the public and rally them to fight back against the governments control. Being citizens of our countries, we are taught to believe the government and carry out the law in an orderly manner but what makes the government’s law right, what if their wrong and we are only following them through fear of their legal power. ‘V for Vendetta’ shows us how an idea is powerful enough to make a nation turn against its own government and create a revolution. An idea is bulletproof ‘the people shouldn’t be afraid of the government, the government should be afraid of the people.’

” There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea…”- Victor Hugo. Throughout the domino scene there is a strong reflection on how powerful an idea has on a nation. Although the power in the government is doled out through the Chancellors command, the dictator of the game underestimates and sees others for less for what they really are. A man with power leads to become predictable. Which V has taken advantage on how he has made himself predictable by allowing power to influence his mind. Leading to also allowing the government to come to be foretell able, allowing V to know their every move before their made ” the problem is, he knows us, better than we know ourselves.”  V,  a man with powerlessness can not be predicted he is not influenced by power, he is purely directed by his own mind. An idea is uncontrollable and when people act upon to arise in a spontaneous manner it will be out from the Chancellor’s reach to change because the unknown will always hit unexpectedly. The Chancellor has made the mistake to wrongly judge his nation because the power that lies in the hands of the citizens is to be shown when all is united behind one single idea, that is when the government will recognize the power of it’s citizens.

In the Domino scene there is to be a robust combination of the two cinematography techniques. Where the use of dialogue is strengthened by the pictures we see in the montage. Inspector Flinch, the narrator, describes a colleague of what he thinks V’s plan of revolution is which then joins with flashes of chaos of complete disorder within the streets of England.

The placing of the first domino symbolizes V’s first step closer to his revolution which flashes back to a point in time of where the Chancellor is mistreating his government and causing them to lead themselves in another direction against him. In order for V to ignite the actions of the citizens, he dispatched over thousands of Guy Fawkes masks all throughout England to each individual. The mask represents a symbolism of freedom, to be given the capability to think and do as one wants to but overall it was a mask of an idea that gave confidence and a strength of power to not be discouraged of their own thoughts and opinions, ‘ beneath this mask there is more than flesh, beneath this mask there is a idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.’ The camera flicks back from the domino being placed to where a little girl is wearing her mask running along in the streets with her arms out acting as if she were flying symbolizing her freedom of being able to embrace one of lives qualities of being a child again.

Slow and steady V’s hand does the work of a masterpiece, placing every domino ever so gently slowly forming his revolution piece by piece. As there is more than just assembling the dominoes there is an order of precision involved. Every occasion had its worth of value to contribute to V’s master piece. An individual domino represents an occasion V has caused to part take apart of his revolution and all was perfectly planned through a sequence of events lined out awaiting to happen.

After V awakened the public by couriering the masks to every door step, chaos was bound to occur, for the citizens to rally together and fight back against the governments control. Chaos is exactly what V wants to be able to bring about the lawlessness, to be uncontrollable and not predicable, ” there is so much chaos someone will do something stupid and when they do things will turn nasty.” Some viewers may feel promoting change through chaos by blowing up buildings and killing public officials is a symbolism of a terrorist. Although V is tagged as a terrorist, V strives for freedom that everyone is granted. V’s purpose is only to awaken the public and rally them to fight back against the governments control.

  2. Hey Soph,

    A few pointers:
    – make sure you’re analysing the effect of the two cinematography techniques, not retelling the order they happen in.

Ensure task particulars are met in body paras:
    – Director intention
    – Position of the viewer through the techniques
    – Worldview
