V for Vendetta internal

“We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I’ve witnessed first hand the power of ideas, cannot touch it, or hold it… ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain. They do not love….And it is not an idea that I miss, it is a man…A man that made me remember the fifth of November. A man that I will never forgot.” V for Vendetta is a remarkable film which exposes the governments flaws of political authority issues it creates without realization from the general public. Through the use of symbolism and dialogue, techniques of cinematography. Which become very important to help the viewer to be able to understand the relationship between the characters and to shape the meaning of the film. James McTeigue director of ‘V for Vendetta’ challenges his viewers to think whether what V does is right or wrong and are quickly forced to decide if he is a freedom fighter or terrorist. V’s purpose is only to awaken the public and rally them to fight back against the governments control. Being citizens of our countries, we are taught to believe the government and carry out the law in an orderly manner but what makes the government’s law right, what if their wrong and we are only following them through fear of their legal power. ‘V for Vendetta’ shows us how an idea is powerful enough to make a nation turn against its own government and create a revolution. An idea is bulletproof ‘the people shouldn’t be afraid of the government, the government should be afraid of the people.’

” There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea…”- Victor Hugo. Throughout the domino scene there is a strong reflection on how powerful an idea has on a nation. Although the power in the government is doled out through the Chancellors command, the dictator of the game underestimates and sees others for less for what they really are. A man with power leads to become predictable. Which V has taken advantage on how he has made himself predictable by allowing power to influence his mind. Leading to also allowing the government to come to be foretell able, allowing V to know their every move before their made ” the problem is, he knows us, better than we know ourselves.”  V,  a man with powerlessness can not be predicted he is not influenced by power, he is purely directed by his own mind. An idea is uncontrollable and when people act upon to arise in a spontaneous manner it will be out from the Chancellor’s reach to change because the unknown will always hit unexpectedly. The Chancellor has made the mistake to wrongly judge his nation because the power that lies in the hands of the citizens is to be shown when all is united behind one single idea, that is when the government will recognize the power of it’s citizens.

In the Domino scene there is to be a robust combination of the two cinematography techniques. Where the use of dialogue is strengthened by the pictures we see in the montage. Clearly showing the impacted of a idea has on a nation. How the an idea can have such power over the movement of people. The idea can not control but can guide the movement into the direction intended. Inspector Flinch, the narrator, describes a colleague of what he thinks V’s plan of revolution is which then joins with flashes of chaos of complete disorder within the streets of England.

V places the first domino on the ground and the director flashes back to the shot of parcels being delivered by freight trucks packed with over thousands of masks that V wears. Symbolizing V’s first part of his plan. This ignited the public to rally back against the government’s control and fight back. The mask gave a symbolism of freedom. The director switches his shot to the little girl wearing her mask running through the streets with her arms out acting as if she were flying embracing her freedom of being able to live one of lives qualities of being a child again. To be given the capability to think and do as one wants to, to give confidence and a strength of power to not be discouraged of its own thoughts and opinions. ‘ Beneath this mask there is more than flesh, beneath this mask there is a idea and ideas are bulletproof.’

An idea is uncontrollable and what it can make people do. After V awakened the public by delivering the masks to every door step, chaos occurred. Chaos is exactly what V wanted to be able to bring about the lawlessness, to be uncontrollable and not predicable, ” there is so much chaos someone will do something stupid and when they do things will turn nasty.” Some viewers may feel promoting change through chaos by blowing up buildings and killing public officials is a symbolism of a terrorist. Although V is tagged as a terrorist, V strives for freedom that everyone is granted. V’s purpose is only to awaken the public and rally them to fight back against the governments control.

Slow and steady V’s hand does the work of a masterpiece, placing every domino ever so gently slowly forming his revolution piece by piece. As there is more than just assembling the dominoes there is an order of precision involved. Every occasion had its worth of value to contribute to V’s master piece. An individual domino represents an occasion V has caused to part take apart of his revolution and all was perfectly planned through a sequence of events lined out awaiting to happen.
